The Story Behind Our Original Best-Selling Design

When we launched our owl clothing line at Ramona Barn Owls, the Straight Outta Ramona design was one of the very first designs we put out into the world.

And not because it’s trend-chasing or flashy, but because it comes from a real place, a real town, and a real sense of pride.

This one came straight out of Ramona, San Diego.

Rooted in a Real Place — Ramona, San Diego

Our very own Fairy Owlet Mother and founder, Stacey Mae Rudge, didn’t always live in Ramona, California. She married into it, trading beach life in Carlsbad for small-town living in the country. And like a lot of people who end up living in Ramona, CA, the town slowly worked its way into her heart.

For those unfamiliar with Ramona, California it’s a small rural community in eastern San Diego County—wide open spaces, deep roots, and a strong sense of identity. It’s the kind of place known for its country lifestyle, local wineries, antique shops, and spending as much time outdoors as possible. 

There’s a real small-town feel here that draws families looking for a slower pace, a closer connection to nature, and still being close enough to San Diego to pop in when needed. And if you love wildlife, well… this place feels like home.

That sense of place matters to us. Ramona isn’t just where our owl brand is based—it’s where it all began.

Inspired by the Heart of Ramona, San Diego

The background of the Straight Out of Ramona design is inspired by one of Ramona’s most recognizable landmarks: the historic Town Hall and Post Office. If you’re local, you know it instantly. 

If you’re not, you can still feel that it’s somewhere specific. Grounded. Familiar. 

Four Owls Who Learned to Stand Their Ground

Front and center are four owls dressed like gangsters. But they aren’t just any owls randomly styled and dropped onto a T-shirt. Just like all Ramona Barn Owls designs, these owls are based on real owl personalities.

They’re a group of four siblings we personally watched grow up through the Ramona Barn Owls livestream.

As juveniles, they ran into trouble. A bigger, older owl from a different family figured out that this nest was basically a food delivery service. Every time the parents brought food for the babies, he’d swoop in and steal it.

Over and over again.

The siblings were smaller, younger, and suddenly getting pushed around. So they did the only thing they could do—they puffed themselves up, got louder, and started standing their ground. They reacted together. They appeared bigger than they were. They stopped being easy targets. Even mom eventually had to step in and chase the bully off for good.

Watching that happen was the turning point.

Those four owls weren’t just owlets anymore. Standing shoulder to shoulder, watching everything, holding their space—they looked tough. Alert. United. Like a little crew that had learned how to protect itself.

In other words: they looked like gangsters.

From Gangster Owls to “Straight Outta Ramona”

 Once the owls had that unmistakable gangster energy, the rest of the design fell into place.

The lettering is a clear nod to the iconic Straight Outta Compton font—because the reference felt familiar and instantly set the tone. People see it and immediately get it.

What makes it work is the contrast.

Instead of a gritty, tough-guy lineup, you’ve got four barn owls standing together like a little woodland crew—confident, united, and unapologetically bold. That same “gangster” energy is there, just reimagined through feathers, sibling bonds, and a small-town Ramona backdrop.

It’s playful. A little cheeky. And unmistakably Ramona.
