Our Straight Out of San Diego Design

One of our most popular designs, Straight Outta Ramona, was one of the very first Ramona Barn Owls designs ever released, and its inspiration came straight from real owls, real land, and real moments that unfolded right here in Ramona. 

It introduced four barn owls who weren’t just faces on a shirt, but real birds involved in a very real moment.

Straight Out of San Diego came along to tell that same story again, but set against a broader San Diego County backdrop. 

Ramona may be rural, but it’s still part of San Diego County, and these owls have come to represent something bigger than one town. Through the designs, they help tell the story of wildlife in San Diego and everywhere — spreading awareness, starting conversations, and reminding people that the wild is still very much part of our lives.

A Story Worth Telling Again

Like all Ramona Barn Owls designs, Straight Out of San Diego didn’t start as an idea for a shirt — it started with a real moment. If you’ve read the story behind Straight Outta Ramona, this one may sound familiar, and that’s intentional. This design features the same four owls and the same interaction, because some stories are worth telling more than once.

That approach is what sets Ramona Barn Owls apart in the world of San Diego clothing brands. The designs aren’t built around trends or slogans — they’re built around real animals and real moments that actually happened.

During one nesting season, a juvenile barn owl decided to test some boundaries. Instead of hunting on his own, he started intercepting rodents that clearly belonged to another owl family. It wasn’t subtle, and it wasn’t accidental. He was bold, curious, and clearly pushing his luck.

The resident family of four responded the way barn owls often do at first. They puffed themselves up, spread their wings, and tried to look larger and more intimidating than they actually were. This kind of posturing is meant to serve as a warning.

The juvenile kept coming back, the tension kept rising, and eventually the mom stepped in and shut it down completely. She defended the nest, protected her family, and made it very clear that the behavior wasn’t going to continue.

It was loud, it was intense, and dare we say, a little bit gangster.

That energy is exactly what shows up in the design.

The San Diego County Backdrop

What sets Straight Out of San Diego apart is the setting around the story.

The background pulls in familiar pieces of San Diego that people instantly recognize — the sweep of the Coronado Bridge, the energy of Petco Park, and the long history of the Hotel del Coronado, paired with palm trees and a slice of coastline that feels unmistakably Southern California.

Each of those landmarks represents a different side of San Diego. The bridge connects communities. The ballpark brings people together. The Hotel Del is a reminder of how long this place has been changing and evolving. Layered together, they create a backdrop that feels busy, lived-in, and very human.

Why the Comic Book Style Fits

If you look closely, you’ll notice the design is done in a black-and-white comic book style, complete with bold lines and halftone dots. That honestly just felt a little fun.

The comic look adds movement and energy, helping capture how loud and tense things actually were, without turning the story into something it wasn’t.

The typography is a playful nod to Straight Outta Compton, a phrase long tied to pride and place. Here, it helps give the design its attitude while keeping it rooted in San Diego.

San Diego is known for sunshine, beaches, and laid-back vibes, but there’s a lot more going on here than meets the eye. Since Straight Out of San Diego celebrates the place just as much as the owls, here are a few fun facts that make San Diego even more interesting.

• San Diego County has more biodiversity than most places in the U.S. From coastline and wetlands to deserts, mountains, and rural farmland, San Diego County is one of the most ecologically diverse regions in the country. That variety is exactly why wildlife — including barn owls — can thrive here in so many different environments.
• The Coronado Bridge wasn’t always welcomed. When it was first proposed, some residents worried it would ruin views or change the character of the area. Today, it’s one of the most recognizable landmarks in San Diego and a major connector between communities.
• Petco Park sits on land with a long history. Before it became a ballpark, the area now known as downtown San Diego was shaped by rail lines, warehouses, and working waterfronts. It’s another example of how spaces evolve — just like the landscapes wildlife adapts to.
• The Hotel del Coronado is over 130 years old. Built in the late 1800s, the Hotel Del has survived fires, floods, wars, and countless changes to the surrounding area. It’s a reminder that San Diego’s story stretches far beyond what we see today.

• San Diego County is home to multiple owl species. Barn owls, great horned owls, burrowing owls, screech owls, and more all live within San Diego County. From open farmland to canyons and coastal areas, different owl species have found ways to adapt to very different environments.
• Owls are protected wildlife in California. It’s illegal to keep owls as pets or attempt to raise them without proper permits. If an owl is injured or truly orphaned, licensed wildlife rehabilitators are the only ones legally allowed to provide care.
